The Open category is divided by operational risk
- A1 covers the lowest exposure to people, subject to aircraft class and conditions.
- A2 allows operation closer to uninvolved people when class, competency and distance rules are satisfied.
- A3 keeps operations far from uninvolved people and at least 150 metres from residential, commercial, industrial or recreational areas.
Common boundaries
Open-category flights remain within visual line of sight, below the applicable 120-metre height limit and do not carry dangerous goods or drop material. National geographic zones still apply.
